Giffnock Open Womens Singles Round-up

The Giffnock Open Womens Singles Results.

Womens Singles Final - Result

Eighth seed Francesca Simpson took on Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako in an evenly contested final. Both players had dominated their Semi-Final opponents recording 6-0, 6-2 victories and it was hard to separate them in the final.

With Simpson serving first the opening 3 games went to service before Jakupovic-Kljako was broken to love. Simpson went on to consolidate this break to lead 4-1. Jakupovic-Kljako held her serve and then broke back to put the match back on serve and from here both players held serve to take us to a tie-break. Jakupovic-Kljako took an early 4-0 with two mini-breaks and led 5-1 at the change of ends. Simpson then came back with her own mini-breaks to tie the breaker at 5-5 before a tremendous rally that saw Jakupovic-Kljako earn her first set point. However Simpson was not done yet and took the match to 6-6 and another change. From here both players held their nerve and each had to save two set points before Jakupovic-Kljako finally got the vital break to take the set 11-9 on the tie-break.

The second set was equally tight with both players show consistency in the opening games before Simpson got the break in the 5th game to lead 3-2. She held this lead until the 8th game before Jakupovic-Kljako broke back to love to put the set back on serve at 4-4. However Simpson was not to be denied in this set and immediately broke back to set her up to serve for the second set. She duly took the set 6-4 serving out to 30 to take us to a deciding set for the title.

The final set started with a titanic struggle as Jakupovic-Kljako looked to hold her serve only for Simpson to finally manage the break after multiple break points. Simpson went on to consolidate to 2-0 before Jakupovic-Kljako blasted back to love to only trail 2-1. After another hold Simpson again put pressure on her opponents serve and however this time after multiple deuces Jakupovic-Kljako held to stay in touch 2-3. Both players raced through their next service matches beofre a titantic struggle on Simpsons service match saw her take the game to lead the final set 5-3. Jakupovic-Kljako was now serving to stay in the final but Simpson again pressurised the serve to lead 0-40 and 3 championship points. Jakupovic-Kljako saved one but unfortunately double faulted to give Simpson the match and the title 6-7, 6-4 6-3.
